The space shuttle lifted off into space today. That's probably why they call it the SPACE shuttle. Anywho a few days ago a 5 inch crack in the foam of the big red fuel tank was discovered and all the big wigs huddled to discuss the options.

They talked about safety.

I can't help but wonder if it was the safety of the crew or the safety of the funding NASA receives if they can keep the shuttle program limping forward until they retire the fleet in a few years.

I send good wishes for the safe return of this crew because I'm fairly sure that the discussion came down to a coin toss.

Comments:
That was on the news here in Ukraine too. Apparently the senior managers of NASA met to discuss this newly discovered five inch crack and a few of them said before the meeting that the shuttle couldn't fly.

When they all came out of the meeting there was not a single word of dissent from anyone. "We're good to go, folks". Oh, to be a fly on the wall at that meeting.

Those poor sods. Hurtling around the earth, unsure of their fate...!

The Space Shuttle programme was a mistake from beginning to end.

And what comes after the shuttle? Back to rockets. Progress? I don't think so.

Why wasn't a fully reusable craft developed? Why didn't they develop a fully reusable craft instead of the Space Shuttle?

Money, I suppose.
